FAQ

What can I expect in counseling with you?

First, we will have an initial conversation in which you outline your presenting problem(s). I will then reasonably determine if I can help you. If so, I will get to know you by asking questions about your background, important relationships, experiences of the world, etc. Once I gain a relatively clear picture of who you are, and what you're struggling with, I'll present a treatment plan that we can both agree on.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. In fact, I believe a consultation is necessary before we properly begin counseling. It's important for both of us to know what to expect and agree on how to get there before we proceed.

Do you accept insurance?

Unfortunately, no, I do not. The primary reason for this is that I believe it can hinder the work between the counselor and client. My current rate is $75 per 50-minute session. If you cannot afford that, please contact me, and we can discuss the possibility of a sliding scale fee.

Why counseling?

Put succinctly, there are at least three unique aspects of counseling that facilitate meaningful change. First, confidentiality gives clients the space they need to be honest without fear of repercussions. Second, the therapeutic relationship is itself a distinctive catalyst of change in which trust is built and emotional experience takes place. Third, counselors are afforded an external perspective into patterns of behavior or ways of being that clients may not be aware of.

Do you offer faith-based counseling?

Yes. I am a former Christian pastor. Faith and spirituality can be important components of my counseling approach, but my approach is always client preferred/directed. I heartily welcome people of all spiritual and religious beliefs and practices, but I do not have expertise in religions besides Christianity.

Can I still see you if I have different beliefs than you?

Absolutely. My job is to help you in a way that aligns with your value system. It would be unethical for me to do otherwise. Some of my closest friends have different belief systems than I do. Differing beliefs do not hinder meaningful work.
